The circular chart illustrates the principal reasons why people aged 15–24 used a personal diary in 2025, while the bar graph compares the proportions in five countries who relied exclusively on a phone to organise their daily activities.

Overall, recording personal experiences was the most common purpose, whereas other uses accounted for the smallest share. Among the nations, the USA had the highest proportion of phone-only organisers, while Australia recorded the lowest figure.

In the diary data, keeping a record of thoughts, feelings and events represented 35%, making it the largest segment. Planning study or employment tasks accounted for a quarter, followed by setting personal goals at just under a fifth. Health and fitness tracking ,on the contrary comprised 12%, while noting creative ideas made up 8% and only 5% used diaries for other purposes.

Turning to the countries, 70% of young Americans organised their routines solely through a phone where India followed at 65%, while Canada and the UK stood at 60% and 55% respectively. Australia had the lowest proportion, at exactly half.

General Training Writing Task 1 — Informal Letter

Dear Raj,

How are you? I hope everything is going well! I’m writing because I really need your help with something. A few friends and I are planning a boys’ trip to Goa next month, but Dad isn’t allowing me to go. Could you please talk to him and convince him?

We’re planning to travel by train and stay in a small hotel near the beach for three days. I’ll be going with three of my closest friends, and we’ve already planned everything, including our accommodation, transport and sightseeing. We want to spend some time at the beach, try some local food and just have a proper break together.

You know how much this trip means to me! We’ve been planning it for weeks, and it would be a great chance for us to spend some time together before our schedules become busy again. I’ll also make sure I stay in touch with Dad every day.

Could you please speak to him for me? Maybe you can explain that we have planned everything carefully and that I’ll be responsible and safe. Do you think you could convince him?!

Please let me know what he says. I’m really counting on you!

Lots of love,
Sam

2. Writing Task 2 — Discuss Both Views

Question: Some people say that listening to music brings peace and motivates individuals, while others believe it makes people restless and destroys their focus. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer

Controversy is as to whether listening to music creates tranquillity and encourages individuals or whether it makes them unsettled and weakens their concentration. The main propaganda of the forthcoming paragraphs is to put forth both sides of the argument comprehensibly and elaborate why I support the view that music is generally beneficial when used appropriately.

Starting with the first notion, first and foremost point is that music can provide emotional relief. When individuals listen to familiar or soothing melodies, which in turn helps them reduce tension and regain a positive frame of mind. For example, students may play calm instrumental tracks after a demanding study session to relax. Another point to note down is that rhythmic music can stimulate motivation. If people listen to energetic songs while exercising, it can make physical activity feel less tiring.

Contradicting the above justifications, constant background music can interfere with concentration. Rather than helping people complete demanding intellectual tasks, complicated lyrics or sudden changes in rhythm may divert their attention. In conjunction with this, excessive listening can make some individuals mentally restless. Not only does continuous audio stimulation reduce periods of silence, but also it can encourage people to switch their attention repeatedly. For instance, employees performing detailed analytical work may make more mistakes when distracted by loud music.

In conclusion, even though music can disturb concentration in certain circumstances, I am inclined towards the view that its calming and motivating effects are more significant when the appropriate type and volume are selected, particularly during routine or less demanding activities rather than highly focused work.
