IELTS Speaking Tip #4: 3 Hidden Band 6 Mistakes That Stop You Reaching Band 7+

IELTS Speaking Tip #4: 3 Hidden Band 6 Mistakes That Stop You Reaching Band 7+

Mistake 1: Giving an Opinion Without Supporting It

What examiners expect

Many candidates answer the question directly but stop after one short reason. Although the answer is grammatically correct, it lacks development. According to the IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors, Band 7+ candidates are expected to extend and support their ideas naturally.

Band 6

Question: Do you enjoy cooking?

> Yes, I do because it is interesting.

Problems:

Only one idea

No explanation

No example

Conversation ends quickly

Band 7

> Cooking is something I genuinely enjoy because it helps me relax after a busy day. I usually prepare simple pasta or grilled chicken in the evening, and experimenting with new recipes gives me a real sense of achievement.

Formula

Opinion
→ Reason
→ Detail
→ Example or Result

Another Example

Question: Do you like reading?

❌ I like reading because it is useful.

✅ Reading has always been one of my favourite hobbies because it allows me to learn new ideas while reducing stress. I normally read self-development books before going to bed, which helps me unwind after work.

Native Expressions

One reason is that...

What I enjoy most is...

The best part is...

Another thing I really appreciate is...

It also helps me...

That's probably why...

Daily Practice

Expand every Part 1 answer to 3–4 sentences.

Never stop after:

> Because it's good.

Always ask yourself:

Why?

How?

Can I give an example?

---

Mistake 2: Using Vague Vocabulary

What examiners expect

Band 7+ speakers use precise vocabulary naturally. They avoid empty words that carry very little meaning.

Weak Words

nice

good

bad

thing

stuff

many

very

big

small

somewhere

These words do not demonstrate lexical resource.

Band 6

Question: What do you do on weekends?

> I do many things with my friends.

Band 8

> I usually catch up with friends at cafés, play badminton in the evening, and occasionally explore newly opened restaurants around my city.

Notice how every vague word has been replaced.

Replace These

Weak Better

good beneficial, enjoyable, rewarding
nice pleasant, fascinating, memorable
thing activity, experience, opportunity
many numerous, several, a variety of
big significant, substantial
very busy hectic
very happy delighted, thrilled
very tired exhausted
very important essential, crucial

More Examples

❌ It was a nice place.

✅ It was a peaceful coastal town surrounded by mountains.

❌ I bought many things.

✅ I bought several books, stationery items and sports equipment.

❌ I watched a good movie.

✅ I watched an inspiring documentary about wildlife conservation.

Practice Rule

Whenever you use:

thing

good

nice

many

Pause and replace them with a more specific word.

---

Mistake 3: Using the Same Sentence Structure Repeatedly

What examiners expect

Candidates who repeat identical sentence patterns sound rehearsed. Examiners reward flexibility.

Band 6 Pattern

I like...

I enjoy...

I prefer...

Because...

Every answer sounds identical.

Example

Do you like tea?

> I like tea because it tastes good.

Do you like music?

> I like music because it is relaxing.

Do you travel?

> I like travelling because it is fun.

The vocabulary changes, but the grammar never changes.

Band 8 Version

Without a doubt, coffee would be my first choice because it keeps me focused throughout the day.

Reading has always been one of my favourite hobbies, especially historical books.

Whenever I get the opportunity to travel, I prefer destinations surrounded by nature.

Sentence Starters

Instead of I like...

Use

One thing I really enjoy is...

I've always been interested in...

Whenever I have free time...

Without a doubt...

Personally speaking...

If I had to choose...

From my perspective...

What appeals to me most is...

It's hard to imagine my life without...

One habit I've developed over the years is...

More Examples

Question: Do you enjoy shopping?

❌ I like shopping because it is interesting.

✅ Whenever I need a break, I usually go shopping because browsing different stores helps me relax.

Question: Do you exercise?

❌ Yes, I exercise because it is healthy.

✅ Staying physically active has become part of my routine, particularly since regular exercise helps me remain energetic throughout the day.

Practice Exercise

Answer the same question in three different ways.

Question: Do you enjoy travelling?

Version 1:

> Travelling is something I genuinely enjoy...

Version 2:

> Whenever I get a chance...

Version 3:

> One activity I never get tired of is exploring new places...

---

Band 9 Speaking Checklist

Before finishing every Part 1 answer, ask yourself:

✓ Did I give a reason?

✓ Did I add a detail?

✓ Did I avoid vague vocabulary?

✓ Did I vary my sentence opening?

✓ Did I sound like I was having a real conversation rather than answering an interview?
